I REFUSE TO LET MY SPIRIT BREAK.

I was born in February 21st, 1995.from a very tender age I have been very passionate about education. My passion has however had low moments now and then due to my family’s situation. I come from not a well to do family, we have had a fare share of low moments. We used to live in Kambi muru and but had to move due to violence. In the year 2002 I lost 2 sisters in quick successions. Our second born died in a fatal road accident and five months later our first born died after short illness. These really shook our family, just when the dust was beginning to settle, my father died. This left my mother devastated, she nearly went mental, walking bare feet, talking to herself, and she recovered after counselling.

I can say that my passion in education has always seen me through, due to my good performance, the head teacher of my primary school offered to pay for my school fees up to class 8. While in school I promised not to let the home situation detract me, I promised to be strong and make a difference, my mother was really straggling now to carter for our needs, she sold books at a commission, the more she sold the better, sometimes she sold nothing, we slept on empty stomachs, this was too much, it drove my sister to early marriage. My mother was shaken, I remember hear her cry silently especially at night, her cries and prayers stung me really hard, the more she cried the more I doubled my efforts in school, I kept myself occupied with books ad drama festivals, I even got to represent my school at the national levels.

In K.C.P.E I did my exams knowing very well that my marks would pay my school fees. This was because my head teacher had told us about the scholarship opportunities offered by children of Kibera Foundation. I was pretty much confident that I would make it in their list; this was because I had never got below 400 marks. It came to pass; I did very well in my K.C.P.E exams scoring 403 points out of the possible 500 and secured the scholarship. It was like a dream; we embraced and cried tears of joy with my mother. One burden, very heavy had been lifted out of our shoulders.

My life experiences have taught me not to despair. I want to join the university and pursue Law. I have big dreams, to help other girls from Kibera just like I was helped, I want my story to motivate many more I want to mentor others girls in Kibera. I hope my story and that of Children of Kibera Foundation will motivate many more.

WE SUPPORTED, ATTENDED AYANY PRIMARY PRIZE GIVING DAY

Our commitment to improve the education standards in Kibera saw us join other education stakeholders from the district to grace the Ayany Primary School prize giving day fete held on the 29th of September.

Children of Kibera Foundation donated 10 trophies for the various academic categories.

This was a special day for us for we have a strong partnership with the school. We helped put up a computer lab in the school, currently serving 30 teachers and 1300 students. Too, this year Sheila Awino made it to our 2011-2014 groups of scholars; the first pupil from the school into our High School Scholarship programme. She was called from her current school (State House Girls) to receive an award of academic excellence and to motivate this year’s candidates. we currently sponsor 34 students into prestigious provincial and National Schools across the country.

As a measure of not letting any student from Kibera not to miss out on the opportunity to register for the next scholarship round, we undertook on-site registration that saw 62 hopeful students register.

We also take this opportunity to recognise the sterling work that Mrs Leah Asego has done in the circles of education in Kibera. Both as a teacher and a lover of the performing arts. As a teacher you inspired many, as a lover of arts you discovered many talents that would have otherwise lay dormant. Not to forget, you were a strong advocate, you stood up for the rights of children and of your fellow teachers. Your voice was strong and clear, it carried conviction and finality.

We wish you well as you go into retirement life. You educated the future.

These are our four main projects....
