Red Rose Middle School New Classrooms

We yield to your generous contribution, in the construction of four classrooms at Red Rose something that will enable us to get to 8th grade.  The donations that came our way actually came purposely from your hearts, hardly –earned income and you gave with no reservations, with great humor and love. Thank you very much!

Visitors come to Art Club

Tuesday Art Club had two wonderful guests for a special art lesson. Hillary, a banker who happens to be a very talented artist, and Deen, who teaches animation, visited art club to share their skills with our art happy students. The students loved having these young men teach them some drawing basics and encourage their creativity.

Lucky looking at a comic book Deen and Hillary brought to give students some ideas. Hillary and Deen are designing their own comic books about the election violence in 2007.

The Young Kiberans For Change youth group, or YK4C as it's commonly known, has a new outreach method.....DRAMA! Yesterday, the "Talented Vissionaires" of YK4C presented two plays to the Kibra Academy Secondary School, where the Children of Kibera Foundation installed its very first computer lab.

YK4C normally hosts student discussions on social, political, economic, and cultural issues such as gender equality, food security, and political violence. The club decided to present their messages through a new medium and wrote and directed their first two plays within a few weeks. The plays address the reprucussions of cheating on loved ones, early pregnancy, crime, and relationship issues. YK4C already has two more plays in the works, one about a pastor who abuses young girls, and another about people effected by HIV.

Facilitators Joscelyn Truitt and Jackie Espana have been supporting YK4C since a Form 4 student, Kevyne Oduor, founded the group.

Pictures and videos to come soon....

Potomac School Volunteers Welcomed w/ Song, Dance & Hand Games

Almost 20 volunteers from Virginia's Potomac School and elsewhere arrived on July 2, 2010. Guests were welcomed by ecstatic Red Rose students, eager to meet their new teachers and friends. After only a few hours of post-flight shut eye, the volunteers met Red Rose teachers, students, and CoKF staff for a welcoming ceremony and performance. Following the event, students and volunteers found common ground among football matches and hand games. Check out pictures and videos below.
