Kibera’s populace of about 700,000 is one of the worlds
disadvantaged in terms of electric power supply which is plagued by: frequent
outages, unavailability, poor and dangerous connections. Majority of the
affected are school going children who direly need this vital commodity to extend
their reading into the night for them to achieve their dreams.
As one of the organization that carries the emblem of
promoting quality education in Kibera, the Children of Kibera Foundation with
the help of her partners identified this problem and came up with a sustainable
solution- The Lit Project. Over the past year and a half, CoKF has involved
itself in distributing solar lanterns at subsidized prices with a payment
scheme tailored to meet the economic capabilities of the local residents.
CoKF has distributed 500 lamps and counting to families
across the 14 villages of Kibera through schools and social groups. The main
objectives of this venture are: to boost children’s literacy and to reduce
health and life risks. The lamps replace the sooty, dim and dangerous kerosene
lamps in home and on study tables. They therefore present a comfortable
environment for studies, giving bright and reliable light leading to longer
study hours. All these benefits coming with zero cost.
The past one week saw us donate 112 solar lanterns to three
public primary schools in Kibera; Olympic, Kibera and Ayany Primary Schools.
The lamps were given out as presents to best performers. We anticipate reaching
more private/non-formal primary and high schools to continue spreading the
profound effects of these solar powered lights as alternative modes of
lighting.
