Reaching Out to Kibera's Future

Maureeen, Outreach Officer taking students through the application form.
In the past one month, Children of Kibera Foundation outreach team embarked on a massive schools tour in Kibera with an aim of increasing awareness on our High School Scholarship Program. This saw them visit 14 primary schools and talked to over 1000 candidates. They used the opportunity to inspire the candidates and wish them success in their forthcoming national exams.

It all started on the 21st of September, the CoKF team was eager and well armed with all the necessary materials as they set out to Olympic Primary School in Kibera. We couldn’t help but notice the buzz that was there as we entered inside the hall where the eighth graders were very excited and totally curious to know what was going on. “What do you think they have come to do?” I heard one boy ask the friend next to him.
After proper introductions, we got into it and gave the children an extensive background about Children of Kibera and all our programmes. We focused on our high school scholarship program and what it takes to be on board (the kind of grades and overall mean score required, the application process…) and we guaranteed full support of high school education through the amazingly dedicated donors and partners that we have which would make it possible to join university on finishing high school. This also happened to the other 13 other primary schools we visited.
The students really responded well, they asked numerous questions and even greatly confided how it’s been a difficult time prepping for the exams, they expressed the various fears and concerns that they have had during this period and we took time to encourage them and make them realize that they have what it takes and can do anything they set their minds on. We wish all the candidates the best of luck in  their forthcoming national examinations (KCPE).
